Spotted: A pack of four Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey’s elephants doing a farewell tour in downtown Providence today, outside of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. This free event, open to the public, was to celebrate the elephants’ last show ever in the Barnum and Bailey’s circus circuit, a move that has been pushed for by animal advocates for years. The circus is at the Dunk April 28-May 1.
During the event, the elephants walked down Sabin Street and feasted on a gigantic “brunch” spread of apples, bananas, and bread loaves, all finished off with a dessert of watermelon — which the pachyderms gleefully crushed with their impressive trunks.
After their final performance on Saturday, April 30 at the Dunk, these performing elephants will be transferred to an elephant reserve in Florida, where they will live out their retirement on over 200 acres of conservation land.
