You don’t think of Rhode Island as a hotbed of BMX biking, but our little state has a number of BMX race tracks and skate parks, and at least one bona-fide extreme sports legend: Kevin (K-Rob) Robinson, an East Providence native who won four X Games freestyle BMX championships.
Now, as Providence bids to bring the X Games back to Rhode Island for the first time in two decades, Robinson is shining a spotlight on the state by attempting a record-breaking BMX trick next month in Kennedy Plaza. No big deal: he’ll just be propelled to 50 mph up a takeoff ramp, soar 18 feet in the air while doing a no-hands flip, and land 100 feet away. The K-Rob Flips Providence event will take place on Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m., and the public is welcome to the free event and an all-day festival with bands, sports demonstrations, food, and more.
