There are gingerbread houses and there are epic gingerbread houses like this one: A 16-foot high beauty that is part of the celebration of Christmas in Newport, and created by the Newport Marriott’s kitchen team. It is said to be the largest working gingerbread house in New England. The culinary creation is in the lobby of the Newport Visitor Information Center. The team took 100 hours to bake, build and decorate the lighthouse, a sugar-and-spice delight that used 350 pounds of organic gingerbread. It’s made up of more than 1,600 bricks, 2,400 pieces of candy and giant lollipops for décor, and 20 gallons of royal icing.
You can park for free at the information center, and check out the lighthouse then wander the city streets, where Christmas in Newport is in its 46th year. Events include tree lightings, lantern-led walking tours, shopping strolls, concerts, visits with Santa and more. For all info, visit www.discovernewport.org
