Walking around Newport recently, we had a hankering for ice cream, despite it being mid-winter. As luck would have it, we spotted a place that’s been around for several years but somehow missed our inspection.
Kilwin’s on Thames Street is one of the newer Newport staples, despite the namesake product being made by Kilwin’s in Michigan, where, the slogan boasts, it is “Sweet in every Sense since 1947.” Made in Newport or not, we found out this is some pretty spectacular ice cream, with one in particular, the salted caramel, hitting the sweet spot. You can’t go wrong with any of it, in a waffle cone or cup, everything from pumpkin to pistachio to “The Perfect Apple Pie” ice cream.
Pretty much everything else is made onsite, and pretty much all of it appealing to the senses, chocolate and fudge and brittle laid out behind glass displays begging to be eaten. They’ve got truffles from champagne to malt to peppermint, raspberry cream, orange cream, and sugar-loving delights like chocolate English walnut.
