We’ve had some great burgers in the city by the sea, but there can only be one best burger, and this year the honor goes to one of our favorite Newport eateries — Jo’s American Bistro.
Voters said Jo’s topped the field of 25 contenders in the first Newport Burger Bender, including 41 North, where we recently enjoyed their fine entry topped with pork belly and pub cheese. The Jo’s burger won on the strength of its bacon onion jam which, combined with sriracha sauce and creamy cheese, make for a sweet and salty delight.
“The secret is out: We have great burgers!” said Joann Carlson, owner of Jo’s. “I especially want to thank my brilliant Chef, Brian Ruffner, for creating such a tasty and messy burger.”
Not only did Jo’s burger win the popular vote, it took “electoral college” honors by winning the heart of Providence Journal food editor Gail Ciampa, who honored Jo’s, Midtown Oyster Bar, and Pour Judgement with her Critic’s Choice Award.
“The fried oysters in the Oyster Bar Burger were amazing and Pour Judgement’s burger was a perfect bargain,” said Ciampa. “The Burger Bender put the spotlight on the All-American burger. But the choices were anything but ordinary as the chefs built their burgers with fabulous flavors and sauces. Long live the burger.”
