The 22nd Annual Newport Flower Show runs June 23-25, with this year’s theme being “Fete Des Fleurs: Paintings and Parterres,” featuring a variety of special guests, colorful floral designs, horticultural exhibits, garden displays and more. It is held at the literally palatial Rosecliff on Bellevue Avenue, one of the city’s historic mansions and one modeled after the Grand Trianon of Versailles.
The show will feature celebrity floral designer Jeff Leatham, and noted scholar on French garden history, Dr. Eric T. Haskell as guest speakers. Fashion icon and interior designer Iris Apfel will be part of the show’s Friday afternoon tea reception, and the soiree’s opening night party runs Friday from 6-9 p.m.
New this year, the Newport Flower Show offers a “Fete de la Lune (Feast by Moonlight),” Saturday from 6-8 p.m., where guests can stroll through the display gardens and enjoy a summer picnic basket on the grounds. They can also opt, for an addition charge, to stick around for a viewing of the 2015 movie “A Little Chaos,” with Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet and Stanley Tucci.
And, of course, there are flowers of all types, including the expansive front lawn being transformed with colorful garden plantings and boxwood-edge parterre beds complementing a series of kinetic sculptures representing earth, wind and fire. On the huge back lawn of Rosecliff is the Oceanside Boutique and Gardeners Marketplace. Throughout the weekend a variety of events and free demonstrations are being held.
