Hascon — Rhode Island based Hasbro’s version of ComicCon — debuts this weekend at the Rhode Island Convention Center and the Dunkin’ Donuts Center with interactive displays focusing on the diverse products produced by the world’s leading toy company, from Monopoly to Star Wars.
Marvel comics legend Stan Lee will deliver a keynote address, along with appearances by celebrities like Mark Wahlberg, Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn, and a variety of New England sports stars, including former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz and New England Patriots running back James White. Rapper Flo Rida will also perform.
Hascon is billed as a family event with an emphasis on play and fandom that runs the gamut from board games to live sports. RITravel had the opportunity to preview the show, which includes large sections devoted to Transformers, Star Wars, and Marvel, including movie props like the Bumblebee car from Transformers, huge models of Optimus Prime and Iron Man, R2D2 and Darth Vader from Star Wars.
Selfie opportunities abound, from posing with a lightsaber to sitting in Emperor Palpatine’s chair to mugging it up in a Thor action-figure box.
Kids and adults can choose from an arsenal of Nerf guns and wage battle in a padded play area or test their aim on a shooting range, toss Nerf footballs, and play some Frisbee golf. Little kids can play in special enclaves devoted to My Little Pony, FurReal Friends, Trolls, and more. Or, join a game of Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.
Playtime can include bowling in a giant game of Yahtzee, tweezing body parts in Operation!, or testing out oddball games that could result in you getting a cream pie in the face or a spritz of water from a toilet bowl (yes, that’s a thing). The show runs Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with doors opening an hour earlier for VIP passholders. Single-day, VIP, and multi-day tickets are available. For more details see the Hascon website.
